Ron Paul is a contender: RNC legal counsel: Delegates unbound

Dr. Ron Paul said he would focus on gathering as many delegates at state GOP conventions as he could going into Tampa — and he’s making good on his promise.

Ron Paul supporters filed en masse to run for Republican Party precinct committee officers, grass-roots elected seats that will be on this year’s primary election ballot.

The goal, said one PCO race newcomer, is to return the party to the principles it used to have.

What does he want?  A few things:

  • Stricter oversight of the Federal Reserve. Paul has long advocated disbanding the Fed but now is willing to go with more regulation if he can get that tidbit as part of the GOP platform;
  • A ban on indefinite detention of American citizens, a direct violation of freedom that began after the terrorist attacks of 9/11 when the USA Patriot Act — which Paul also opposes — became the law of the land;
  • More freedom on the Internet.  While Congress and the White House pushes for more regulation and censorship on the ‘Net, Paul stands firm on greater freedom on the digital frontier.
  • And a lot more in terms of civil liberty’s, balancing the budget, ending corrupt federal programs and ending the wars.

www.upi.com has reported:

“The legion of Paul supporters will tell you those numbers aren’t correct, either, since they don’t include unbound delegates who are Paul backers and don’t account for Romney delegates who could go rogue in Tampa. Which would make things uncomfortable for Romney and the Republican establishment.

Robin Koerner, a member of the grassroots movement backing Paul, says Paul may not get 1,144 delegates, but “there are big, big numbers” backing him, perhaps enough to block a first-round nomination for Romney and force a second round that he says Paul could win.”

www.examiner.com reported:

“In what may be the most stunning revelation of the ongoing GOP presidential nomination process, it has been discovered that in 2008, the RNC Legal Counsel legally interpreted the RNC rules and concluded that all delegates, regardless of state party rules, could vote for whomever he or she chooses at the Republican National Convention. This legal inquiry by the RNC was the result of a delegate’s desire not to vote for a candidate who did not represent his principles. The significance of this legal interpretation by the RNC lawyers is that all delegates are free to vote for any candidate regardless of any such “binding”. Because the RNC was the organization that conducted this legal examination, their ruling trumps all state GOP rules.”

The www.csmonitor.com reported:

“He’s gotten a lot of attention working through the two-party system and he’s gotten a lot of people involved,” said his son, Sen. Rand Paul (R) of Kentucky, in a Fox News interview earlier this month. “I mean, the chairman of Iowa now was Ron Paul’s campaign chairman. The chairman of Nevadawas a Ron Paul campaign person. We’ve won several states and are influencing the party and becoming the Republican Party.”

The Examier went as far as to post this article:
RNC Legal Counsel: Delegates are unbound, Ron Paul poised to win the nomination

“Jennifer Sheehan, Legal Counsel for the RNC, plainly stated in a letter to Nancy Lord, Utah National Committeewoman, several weeks before the convention, ‘The RNC does not recognize a state’s binding of national delegates, but considers each delegate a free agent who can vote for whoever they choose” – Legal statement by the RNC Legal Counsel
