How to survive a water outage.

Recently a huge water outage effected the Ft. Lauderdale, Fl. area. My Facebook wall was exploding with status updates like this: “We have no water! I need a shower! I can’t cook!” This inconvenient drama occurred at no better time, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day! Talk about bad timing.

This episode can teach us a few key survival techniques.. as in how to prepare for lack of water or no water. This basic necessity becomes serious business when you have kids, pets or both to care for, so being prepared is a good idea.

After hurricanes Jeane and Francis we had no power or water for 2 weeks, and sence then have had several incidences where water has been restricted or unavailable.

These keys products are a great way to be prepared for when it happens again, because trust me.. it will happen again. Look at it like this, we buy auto insurance, life insurance, health insurance, homeowners insurance, renters insurance.. shouldn’t we insure our survival?

A camp shower is a excellent item to have, and are very inexpensive. If you have a water source like a pool at your home, these neat inventions will heat the water with solar energy and provide you with a nice shower, and will keep your pool clean by avoiding the plunge in with shampoo (you will be tempted.) Coghlan’s Camp Shower $8.00

This next item is a must. These tablets will turn nasty water, into drinkable water for severe water outages, after the store shelves have cleared.
Potable Aqua Water Treatment Tablets Potable Aqua Water Purification Iodine Tablets (50 Tablets) Iodine tablets designed to make contaminated water suitable for drinking

  • Tablets prove effective against Giardia lamblia when used as directed
  • Intended for short-term or limited emergency use only
  • Water is ready within 30 minutes; neutralizes iodine aftertaste and color Potable Aqua Water Treatment Tablets $6.50

Don’t have a natural water source by your home? The Algreen 81002 Agua 50-Gallon Rain Water Collection and Storage System is not only pretty, but can be a real life saver when you need to water pets, shower, or keep the garden from drying out. Algreen 81002 Agua 50-Gallon Rain Water Collection and Storage System $152.00

After I use the tablets to purify the water, I like to run it though one of these. Boiling the water is a great idea also, but not always a option if the power is also out. These pitchers are handy year round, and a good thing to have in the kitchen. Brita 42412 Atlantis Water Pitcher $22.99
